US MAIL AND ICE CREAM

August 24
The only way to really see Lake Winnipesaukee is to get on a boat and take a tour…that is if you don’t have your own boat. We could have taken the Mount Washington, but we really don’t like those impersonal big ones that can take on a hundred plus passengers. We opted for the smaller boat…the Sophie C. This is an actual working US Mail Boat. She delivers mail to six islands on Lake Winnipesaukee…three in the morning and another outing to deliver to the other three in the afternoon. The mail gets delivered and passengers get to see what’s happening around the lake.
THE MOUNT WASHINGTON TOUR BOAT

THE SOPHIE C. MAIL BOAT

We boarded the Sophie C. at Weir’s Beach on a sunny warm day just right for cruising. We passed Governor’s Island with its many million dollar+ summer homes; we saw a huge house built on it’s very own tiny island, and we cruised by Dollar Island…an island that actually sold many many years back for $1.00. I don’t think it would go for that today! Lake cottages dot the lakeshore all around…some rustic, some new…big and small.

WEIR'S BEACH...SWIMMING, BOATING, AND TRAIN RIDES

GOVERNOR'S ISLAND...THERE IS A BRIDGE TO THIS ISLAND
HOPE THESE ISLANDS STAY AFLOAT!
CRUISING AROUND LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE

Mail call is a big event on the islands. Not only is the mail picked up and delivered, but ice cream is also delivered! Children are waiting on the docks to buy Fudgesickles, Eskimo Pies, Nutty Buddies, Strawberry Shortcakes, and other delectable edibles from the mail boat. It’s a huge event that takes place daily during the summer months.
I SCREAM...YOU SCREAM...WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!
The tour only lasted two hours, but that was just the right amount of time. It was relaxing and informative; we saw beautiful homes and quaint lake cottages. We were even buzzed from overhead by an Ultralight…now
that would be the way to take in the sights…from above!

A GREAT DAY TOURING LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE!!
