Sweet Charleston!

Charleston, SC October 1-4
Another reunion was in store when we visited friends in Charleston. Two of Frank’s married college classmates make their home on the Isle of Palms. We had not seen Kevin and Kathy since our last visit to Charleston in 2006. We met several times during our four days there for wonderful meals at their recommended restaurants. So many choices and not one of them bad!! Kathy is also an excellent cook and shared a few recipes with me that will come in handy during the holidays.
HAPPY GRANDPARENTS! THEY LEARNED WHILE WE WERE THERE THAT THEIR SON WAS TAKING A NEW JOB IN ATLANTA. NOW THEIR GRANDDAUGHTER WOULD BE ONLY FIVE HOURS AWAY!
Another fun thing we did…maybe more fun for me than Frank…was to walk the Ravenell Bridge that links Charleston to Sullivan Island and Isle of Palms. From end to end including ramps, you can walk or ride a bike almost five miles. It is a beautiful and scenic way to get your exercise while viewing the harbor, river, and looking out to the ocean. I got the entire walk in while Frank quit when he reached the top. However, I was proud of him for walking two miles!

CITY MARINA...WHERE ALL THE YACHTS DOCK!

A DRIVE OUT TO FOLLY BEACH
While here, we parked Pearl at James Island County Park. This was a great county park with miles of walking and biking trails. During the holidays the entire park is decorated with Christmas lights. They had already started putting up the lights and according to our friends, John and Rosi, who have stayed there in November, the lights are spectacular! Wish we could have seen it all lit up!

Don’t worry, Jean, I picked up your glazed pecans while in Charleston. Glad our little mouse we picked up here or in Tennessee, didn’t find them!!

Sunrise at Myrtle

Myrtle Beach September 23-30
Another place we like to stay when on the east coast route is Ocean Lakes at Myrtle Beach, SC. A huge campground right on the ocean where we always get an oceanfront site. It’s a super busy place! Golf carts darting about, RV’s coming and going, a great place to take morning walks, and of course, watch the beautiful sunrises.

RELAXING ON THE BEACH
While here we once again got to see our friends, Charlie and Barb. The last we saw them was in Boothbay, Maine when we camped there for 10 days…they were our RV neighbors. Here in South Carolina, they have a beautiful home at Heritage Plantation located at Pawley’s Island. That was just a short drive from Myrtle Beach. We drove over for dinner and they took us sightseeing on the Island. Can’t believe I didn’t get my camera out and take some pictures! The marshes were so beautiful. What a lovely couple and an enchanting community! We also were able to get in a goodbye lunch with Charlie and Barb later in the week at PF Chang’s before we left for Charleston.

Beaches Down the Eastern Seaboard

We are almost home…today is October 19, 2009; we will be staying in Tampa at Lazydays for at least two nights before traveling on to Ft. Myers. We always make it our last stop to do some clean up on the coach and also check in with service to have some things repaired or at least make an appointment for a future date. So, guess I better finish up the travel blog; there is still the beach trip down the Eastern Shore…Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston…to write about!

Virginia Beach, September 18-22
We always love the stop in Virginia Beach. Several years ago we found a great RV park on General Booth Blvd. It’s a Holiday Travel Park, but they have these terrific super sites! The park also has its own parking at the beach and that is very convenient! We love to go to the beach and walk the boardwalk there; it is one of the best beach walking or bike riding areas we have found! This year we missed the Neptune Festival…they were preparing for it the weekend after we left for Myrtle.

I have a friend who lives in Chesapeake and when we are there we always get together. This visit Kim brought her two sons over for a cookout. I thought Ian and Arrick would be totally bored with us, but actually they turned out to be very entertaining and I think they enjoyed our time together! Always good to see boys grow up to be nice young men! Kim you should be proud. John, too! We didn’t get to see John this time…he was at sea.
CAMPGROUND VISITORS
We also got to see Dallas and Mike again. This is the couple we met in Vermont, then met up again in Lake George and for the last time, here in VA Beach...then we parted ways. They were off to their home in the North Carolina mountains. Hope to see them this winter since they will be wintering in Jacksonville.
While at VA Beach, we made a Sunday drive to Richmond to see my cousin, Sissy, and visit with her family…husband Craig, daughter Caroline, her two cutie pies, Lucy Grace and Lane; Daughter Amanda brought over her new baby, James Thomas. It was so good to see them! Sissy and Craig grilled some fabulous Alaskan Salmon that Craig had recently caught on his fishing trip there. We had a special time visiting with everyone! Hope we see them again soon!

Touring The White House

September 14-17
When in DC, we always stay at Cherry Hill in College Park, Maryland. This is a well known RVer destination if Washington is on the agenda. The park makes it so convenient to get into the city via city bus making a connection to the Metro. All you have to do is just follow the colors of the lines you want to take. If you want to take a tour of the city, many of the tour buses pick up groups right at Cherry Hill. You never have to take your car into the bustling city, and you really want to avoid that if at all possible!

BUSES AND THE METRO...BILL, CYNDI, PAMI, AND FRANK WAITING ON THE METRO
THE TOOMBS OF THE METRO...GET OUT FAST...GET ON FAST!
This was our second trip to Washington. We saw most of the monuments and did several tours in ‘06…nothing was repeated this time. Our main purpose here was to visit the White House. Due to the tightened security after 9/11, you have to have a security clearance. We applied for this in March 2009 and finally got our acceptance just a week before arriving. My brother-in-law, Allan, got the paperwork through the office of Congressman Bart Gordon from Tennessee. Bart is a Murfreesboro native and a long time friend.

On the day of our tour, we had to be up at 4 a.m., catch the bus at 5:20, and connect to the Metro to be in the city for a 7:30 tour. No cameras, handbags, or backpacks, could be taken into the White House. Being in the city after the tour, I would have no camera or lipstick!! That problem was solved by our friends, Bill and Cyndi, who met us afterwards, bringing my purse…couldn’t have made it all day without those two items!! What a schedule just to take a 30 minute tour!!
FRANK OUTSIDE THE SECURITY GATES AT THE WHITE HOUSE...DAY BEFORE THE TOUR
The tour was a bit disappointing because only five rooms were shown…Red Room, Library, Yellow Room, etc. The guides are Secret Service agents who have become White House docents. Our agent was a young man who graduated from Mississippi State and was drafted by the Washington Redskins for a pro football career; however being cut, he went into the Secret Service. He was well versed in the history of paintings, furniture, and function of each room we were led through. Overall it was impressive and we at least have a sense of location as to where the President signs bills, delivers televised speeches, and meets with Heads of State. Just wish I could have taken a few pictures!!
AFTER THE TOUR IN FRONT OF THE WHITE HOUSE
Before visiting the White House, we filled our days with other pastimes. We visited the American History Museum…it had been closed for renovation our last time here. The Star Spangled Banner exhibit was most impressive. The First Ladies’ Exhibit was still under construction and only a small showing of Inaugural Ball Gowns were displayed. The Willard Hotel offered up a bit of history; we found the lobby there to be a great spot to rest our weary sightseeing feet.

Meeting up again in Washington after leaving Pennsylvania, we got to do several things with our new friends, Bill and Cyndi. They were also staying at Cherry Hill and would be there for two weeks touring on their own, and then later meeting up with a rally that would be touring just about everything Washington and the area had to offer!
We went to the National Zoo together and took a picnic lunch...dinner at Five Guys after the zoo! We met at the Holocaust Museum after our White House tour. We also had lunch at the Old Ebbitt Grill, a popular restaurant for the politicos of Washington. Frank and I actually ate there twice…good food and a great place to people-watch!

After lunching at the Old Ebbitt, Frank and I took a cab to the Rayburn Office Building to say hello to Bart…our congressman and friend from Tennessee. Bart met with us for hometown talk and a quick photo session before sending us over to the Capitol Building. One of his young aides, Eric, was sent with us to give us a personal tour.
CONGRESSMAN GORDON...AN OFFICE WITH A VIEW...ERIC GIVES THE TOUR
This was a fantastic tour! We were actually more impressed with the Capitol than the White House. So much history with a personal touch given by Eric who was very knowledgeable of the building. While in the Small Senate Rotunda, Frank recognized Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy walking through in a group. Frank said as he was passing, “There’s a good Vermonter” stopping the Senator in his tracks. The two of them shook hands as Frank told him he, too, was a Vermont native…they stood talking like two old friends.

It was an exhausting trip…Washington will wear you out with all the walking. However, what a place of history…the center of American Democracy and Freedom. Everyone should go there at least once in their lifetime!
