Pennsylvania Dutch

September 10-13
Last year we spent some time in Shipshewana, Indiana…Amish country. This year we spent four days in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Dutch territory…more Amish. Really beautiful farmland and lots of good cooking!

We found a jewel of a campground…Country Haven…that offered a spectacular view. For miles, one could see a sweeping vista of farmland in the valley below. Another plus to its location was the Amish farmhouse right across the road had a bakery open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday…just right for our visit! Amish Sadie baked up some of the best doughnuts and cinnamon twists…we know, we visited twice, and on Saturday nights, they even delivered!

Country Haven made a great base to explore all the little hamlets around the area. Blue Ball, Paradise, Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand, and Virginville were some of the names. I kid you not! These were the names! Our favorite village was Intercourse…full of little shops and good restaurants! Could even buy a tee shirt that said “I Luv Intercourse”…we passed! Wonder what possessed the settlers of this area to give the towns these names. Mail order brides must have been the rage!!

One thing for sure, the food in Amish areas is always delicious. We bought varieties of cheese, sausage, sweet breads…apple and raspberry, and doughnuts! Our freezer is full but will dwindle quickly. We also found more ice cream…Lapps Dairy!

WHERE DOES LAPP'S ICE CREAM COME FROM...MOOOOOO!!
Another plus to our stay here was that we met Bill and Cyndi. We struck up an immediate friendship and found out that Cyndi’s mother lives in North Ft. Myers…it’s such a small world! After Pennsylvania, we all left for Washington, DC where we both were staying at Cherry Hill…more fun together!
