Making Friends and Memories in Door County

We made several new friends while in Door County…really awesome neighbors while parked at Bailey’s Grove. On our left was a couple from South Dakota…Dave and Anne, plus their three kids Coda, Molly, and little rambunctious Josie! Shih-Tzus…not children!! This family hailed from Sioux Falls. We also met their friends, John and Mary, who were up for a weekend; they reside in Michigan. Dave and Anne are still employed so their vacation time was limited before having to return to the world of “work”…four letter dirty word for us retired folks!! Besides sightseeing and wine tasting, Dave likes to paint with watercolors. He does beautiful work in miniature…postcard style depicting lighthouses and other scenes that catch his eye. On our last night with them, he presented us with a watercolor of our coach, Black Pearl. Just today, we received another surprise from them...a handmade watercolor magnet! We couldn't find a magnet in the shape of an egg representing Egg Harbor. So Dave makes one and paints a beautiful scene of the harbor with a sailboat!! What treasures we will cherish…friendship and mementos!! Thanks so very much Dave and Anne!

Our other next door neighbors were The Texans…Ben, Sue, and their large Tabby, St. George. They live in Austin, TX, but Ben grew up in Sturgeon Bay; he knew all the good places to go and interesting facts about the area. He certainly knew the place to go for Prime Rib and on our last night there, they treated us to the best 16 oz around!! I don't think they could have done it better in Texas, Ben! They come to Door County and stay for three months. Ben is retired Air Force…a flight surgeon. Sue is originally from Tennessee, so we immediately bonded! And that’s not all…we had a link to the past…Smyrna, Tennessee!

Sue and her husband (BB) were stationed in Smyrna at Sewart Air Force Base! Guess where they lived…in a little trailer park (Ross Trailer Park) across the street from our farm on Sam Davis Road. My parents had just built a small red brick house on the farm‘s frontage. Sue questioned me if our kitchen had knotty pine cabinets and a fireplace. Bingo! Sue drank coffee with my mother regularly and her little son and my little sister (both under 2 yrs and born the same year) played together! Now how weird is that…us meeting some 50 years later in Wisconsin and finding this out! For some reason, Sue can’t remember me as a 7 year old, but of course it wasn’t until years later that I developed my “non-forgettable” personality! *L* What a small world, uh!

We love traveling and meeting terrific people like Dave and Anne, John and Mary, Ben and Sue. It’s always fun having cookouts and sitting around the campfires swapping stories about places we have been and things that have happened to us along the way. These new friends will always be in our hearts and memories until we meet up again!!

After leaving Door County we headed to Mackinaw City, Michigan to stay at Mill Creek Campground. We arrived there on June 28, but that's another entry in the blog for another day! Stay tuned!
