The National Cherry Festival

The National Cherry Festival has been taking place in Traverse City since the 1920's and has now grown to attracting over 500,000 visitors. When making our reservations for this year's trip, we had no idea we would be right in the middle of the festival and cherry picking time! The town was extremely busy for the first couple of weeks in July. The festival ran from July 4-July 12. This town goes bonkers for everything cherry and really gets into the spirit of the festival! From boat races to bed races; cherry pie eating contests to spitting the pits; best dressed pets to Ultimate Air Dogs; parades and cherry queens...there are hundreds of events that continue throughout the week.

Of course you can't forget the food! Cherry pies, Cherry wine, Cherry ice cream, sauces, jams, salsas...everything is made from CHERRIES!!! We have bought so many different cherry products and eaten so many cherries, I‘m surprised we haven‘t actually turned into one!! Remember, when we were in Door County, it was cherry time there, too…a double dose of cherries!! Pies were our favorite in Door County, but here in Traverse City, we have discovered Cherry Bread…made by Hoxies Farm Market…and lucky for us, just a half mile down the road from the RV resort! Another favorite has to be Moomers Ice Cream…Moomer’s Cherries Moobilee…just heavenly; homemade ice cream made right from the cows you see there on the dairy farm! Talking about fresh!!
A Trip to Moomers with John and RosiThe Lines at Moomers can get really long!!!

This is what happens to Frank when he can't get
Moomers Ice Cream!!!

Our first two weeks in Traverse City found us not lacking for entertainment, but there was lots of traffic to maneuver through. However, getting to all those “cheery cherry” events and goodies, made it all worth while!

Interesting reading about the Cherry Festival in Michigan.

I reside in Macon, Georgia and we have the "Cherry Blossom Festival" in late March of each Year. We have more Cherry Trees here in Macon then they do in Washington, D.C.

I liked your pictures and your comments.
