Moose On the Loose!

July 3 took us on the east side loop of the Cabot Trail. Today we drove over 200 miles viewing the areas of St. Anne’s Bay, Ingonish, and all the way to the Top of the Island…Meat Cove.

We left at 12:30 in the afternoon and returned at 10:00 that night. Lots of stops…first for lunch at the Bell Buoy in Baddeck and the last stop for dinner at the Keltic Lodge in Ingonish. In between those stops, we had awesome encounters with a Bald Eagle and a rambling moose…actually, two Moose…one decided to cross the road in front of us on our drive back. It was too dark for pictures of that one…good thing we saw her!! We also took a wrong turn and ended up, literally, at the end of the road! Lucky for us, a ferry was waiting to give the wanderers a lift across the short expanse of St. Anne’s Bay. Maybe we should make sure we get home before dark!!

KELTIC LODGE AND RESORT

The wildflowers, Lupine, dot the landscape during the months of June and July. At times you see fields with eye-catching patches. The roadsides are dotted with the pink, lavender, and deep purple Lupine.

Driving all the way to the top of Cape Breton to Meat Cove was indeed an adventure! Up and down, winding curvy, fog to sunshine and blue skies, from 54 degrees to 72 degrees. The last 5 miles of the trip was on a hard packed dirt road full of potholes. However, we were determined to plant our flag at the top and not turn back!
THE ROAD AND VIEW UP

Upon reaching the top of the island, what do we find?.. a Campground and Chowder!! Unbelievable!! What a view…it was worth the drive, but can’t imagine driving Pearl to this campground! Meeting a young Canadian couple who had been camping here, we got our picture made with the beautiful North Atlantic and seacoast behind us. The sun was even shining!!

A footnote: We took a wrong turn after dark that led us to the Englishtown Ferry...it was a very short $5 crossing. We later got a view of where we had been!
